How to Loop a Video (Free, Online or FFmpeg)

How to turn a short clip into one longer looping video for stories, LinkedIn, screens and backgrounds, and how to make the loop point invisible.

How to Loop a Video (Free, Online or FFmpeg)

To loop a video, repeat the clip several times back to back and save it as one file. QuickVeed's free Video Looper plays a clip 2 to 10 times and records one video with sound, in your browser, without uploading it. FFmpeg's -stream_loop does the same without re-encoding. For a seamless loop, make the last frame match the first.

Why loop a file at all? Many places play a video once and stop: Instagram stories, LinkedIn posts, slides, shop screens and some players. A looped file keeps going there without any settings. This guide covers both ways to make one and how to hide the join.

The short answer

Open QuickVeed's free Video Looper, drop in the clip, choose how many times it should play (2, 3, 4, 5, 8 or 10), and click Loop and save; the result can be up to 20 minutes. With FFmpeg, run ffmpeg -stream_loop 4 -i in.mp4 -c copy out.mp4 to play the clip five times. Trim the clip so its end matches its start for a smooth loop.

Key takeaways

  • A looped file repeats anywhere; a player's loop setting only works in that player.
  • FFmpeg's -stream_loop counts extra plays: -stream_loop 4 plays the clip five times.
  • The join is invisible only if the last frame flows into the first: trim, or play the clip forward then backward.
  • Short-form apps already replay videos, so for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, a single well-cut loop is usually better than a repeated file.

Disclosure: we make QuickVeed and show how to do this in it, along with other ways. Details about other products come from their public pages, checked in October 2026 and linked at the end.

How to loop a video in your browser

QuickVeed's Video Looper is free, runs in your browser, never uploads your file and adds no watermark.

  1. Open the Video Looper and drop an MP4 or WebM file up to 500 MB.
  2. Choose the number of plays: 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 or 10. The new length updates straight away; the total can be up to 20 minutes.
  3. Click Loop and save. The browser plays the clip that many times back to back and records one video, with the sound repeating each time.
  4. Download the looped file.

The browser plays the video once and records the result, so saving takes about as long as the finished video. Keep the tab open and in front while it runs. The file is MP4 where your browser can record MP4 (Chrome, Edge and Safari can) and WebM otherwise; the result is re-encoded, so it isn't a bit-for-bit copy of the original.

There may be a fraction of a second at each restart. For a clip that has to loop perfectly, prepare it with the tips below first, or use FFmpeg, which joins the repeats without a gap.

How to loop a video with FFmpeg

FFmpeg's documentation describes -stream_loop as the number of times the input is looped: 0 means no loop and -1 means loop forever. Because the count is extra plays, 4 gives five plays in total.

GoalCommand
Play a clip 5 times, no re-encodingffmpeg -stream_loop 4 -i in.mp4 -c copy out.mp4
Loop to an exact length (60 s)ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i in.mp4 -t 60 -c copy out.mp4
Loop a clip under a longer audio trackffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i clip.mp4 -i music.mp3 -map 0:v -map 1:a -shortest -c:v copy out.mp4

With -c copy the cut can only fall on a keyframe, so the exact length can be off by a fraction of a second; drop -c copy to re-encode if the timing must be exact. The last command is useful for a background video under a podcast or a playlist: the picture repeats until the audio ends.

How to make a seamless loop

A loop looks seamless when nothing jumps at the join. Four ways to get there:

TechniqueHowWorks for
Match the endsTrim so the last frame looks almost like the firstWaves, flames, traffic, slow camera moves
Forward then backwardReverse a copy and join it to the originalAlmost any short clip; it always meets itself
Static camera, moving subjectLock the camera, start and end on the same poseProduct spins, steam, pouring
Generate itPrompt an AI model for a looping motionAbstract backgrounds and ambient scenes

The forward-then-backward trick (sometimes called a boomerang or ping-pong loop) is the easiest. Make a reversed copy with the free Video Reverser, then join the original and the reversed copy with the free Video Merger. Then loop that pair. See how to reverse a video for the steps.

Sound is the other giveaway. A voice or song that cuts mid-word makes the loop obvious, so for backgrounds and displays, mute the clip with the free remove audio tool or loop the picture under a separate music track.

Where looping helps, and where it doesn't

WhereDoes it loop on its own? What to do
TikTok, Reels, Shorts feedsYes, the apps replay videosPost one loop; cut it so the end runs into the start
Instagram and Facebook storiesNo, a story plays onceLoop the file to fill the story length
LinkedIn and X postsDepends on the app and lengthLoop short clips into one file if they should keep playing
Slides, kiosks, shop screensOften only if the player is set to repeatA looped file, several minutes long
Website hero backgroundYes, with the HTML loop attributeKeep the file short and small; let the page loop it

On a website, don't loop the file: a short clip with the HTML loop, muted and autoplay attributes is smaller and smoother. Shrink it with the free video compressor, or make a GIF with the free video to GIF converter for places that don't play video.

Looping for a shop screen, event or video call background

A display loop has different needs from a social post. Three practical rules:

  1. Make it long enough to avoid obvious repeats. A 10-second clip looped for an hour repeats 360 times; viewers walking past notice. Join three or four related clips with the free Video Merger first, then loop the set.
  2. Match the screen. A portrait shop screen needs 9:16 and a TV needs 16:9. Resize without cutting anything off with the free Video Resizer before you loop.
  3. Test on the real player. Some TVs and signage players only play MP4 with H.264. If your browser saved WebM, convert it with FFmpeg or HandBrake before you copy it to a USB stick.

For prices, opening hours or a call to action, add the text once to the clip with the free Add Text to Video tool before looping, so it shows on every repeat.

Making a clip worth looping

Short ambient clips are the most common thing to loop: a product turning, steam from a cup, a slow pan across a shop. If you don't have footage, the AI video generator makes 2 to 15 second clips from a prompt or a product photo. Prompts that describe a continuous, repeating motion (“slow steady rotation”, “gentle waves”) loop more easily than ones with a beginning and an end. See how to make AI B-roll for prompts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a video loop several times in one file?

Open it in QuickVeed's free Video Looper, choose 2 to 10 plays and click Loop and save. With FFmpeg, use -stream_loop with the number of extra plays and -c copy.

How do I loop a video on YouTube?

That's a player setting, not a file change: on a computer, right-click the video and choose Loop. To loop your own upload for everyone, upload a longer, looped file.

Why is there a gap when my video loops?

Players and some tools pause briefly at the restart. Join the repeats into one file, ideally with FFmpeg, and trim the clip so its end matches its start.

How do I make a boomerang-style loop?

Reverse a copy of the clip and join it to the original, so it plays forward then backward, then loop that.

How long can a looped video be?

QuickVeed's browser looper makes up to 20 minutes. FFmpeg has no practical limit.

Does looping reduce quality?

With FFmpeg and -c copy, no. Browser tools re-encode, which loses a little, as any export does.

Try it with your own video

Loop your clip for free, or generate a short ambient clip worth looping. Describe a slow, repeating motion, pick a model and judge the clip for yourself. QuickVeed plans start at $18/month, and new accounts get a 14-day trial with 75 credits, no card needed. Sign up or see pricing.
