To screen record for free, use the recorder already on your device: Snipping Tool on Windows 11 (Windows + Shift + R), the Screenshot toolbar on a Mac (Shift-Command-5), Screen record in a Chromebook's quick settings, or Control Center on iPhone. In a browser, QuickVeed's free Screen Recorder records a tab, window or screen with your microphone, no install.
Each option handles sound differently, and that's where most recordings go wrong. Below are the steps for each device, how to capture your voice and the computer's sound, and settings that keep tutorials and demos readable.
The short answer
On Windows 11, press Windows + Shift + R in Snipping Tool, select an area and click Start. On a Mac, press Shift-Command-5, choose Record Entire Screen or Selected Portion, pick a microphone under Options and click Record. On a Chromebook, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows and choose Screen record. In any desktop browser, QuickVeed's free Screen Recorder records with your mic and tab sound.
Key takeaways
- Every major system has a free screen recorder built in; you rarely need to install anything.
- Computer sound is the tricky part: the Mac toolbar needs macOS 27 or later for system audio, and browsers share tab or system audio only if you tick the box.
- Record one window or tab rather than the whole screen to keep notifications and other apps out.
- Browser-based recording works on computers only; phone browsers can't capture the screen, so use the phone's own recorder.
Disclosure: we make QuickVeed and show how to do this in it, along with other ways. Details about other products come from their public pages, checked in October 2026 and linked at the end.
How to screen record in your browser (no install)
QuickVeed's Screen Recorder works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS. It is free with no sign-up and no watermark, and the recording stays in your browser until you download it.
- Open the Screen Recorder. Leave Record my microphone and Record the tab or system sound ticked, or untick either.
- Click Start recording and choose a browser tab, a window or your entire screen in the share window. In Chrome and Edge, tick Share tab audio (or Share system audio for the whole screen) to include the computer's sound.
- Recording starts after a 3-second countdown. Pause and resume as needed; it stays one file.
- Click Stop, or the browser's Stop sharing button, watch it back and download it.

How to screen record on Windows
Microsoft's help page describes recording with Snipping Tool in Windows 11:
- Open Snipping Tool, select Record, then New. Or press Windows logo key + Shift + R.
- Drag to select the area of the screen to record, then select Start.
- Select Stop when you're done.
- Save the recording, or choose Edit in Clipchamp to trim it, adjust the volume or add captions.
Microsoft's page documents video recording only for Windows 11. Before you record a narrated tutorial, do a five-second test to check your microphone is being picked up, and check that the computer's sound behaves as you expect. If you need a guaranteed mix of voice and system sound, the browser recorder above lets you choose both.
How to screen record on a Mac
Apple's help page covers two ways. The Screenshot toolbar is quickest:
- Press Shift-Command-5.
- Choose Record Entire Screen, Record Selected Portion, or Record Selected Window (on macOS Tahoe 26 or later).
- Click Options to pick a microphone, include system audio (macOS 27 or later), show mouse clicks, set a timer or change where the file is saved.
- Click Record. To stop, click the Stop button in the menu bar or press Command-Control-Escape.
Recordings are saved to the desktop by default. The second route is QuickTime Player: choose File > New Screen Recording (Control-Command-N), and QuickTime opens the recording when you stop so you can trim it.
How to screen record on a Chromebook
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, or open Quick Settings and choose Screen capture.
- Select Screen record at the bottom, then full screen, a partial area or a single window.
- Open Settings in the capture bar to turn on the microphone, device audio or both, and the front camera if you want your face in the corner.
- To stop, select the stop button at the bottom right or press Search + Shift + X.
Google's Chromebook help says videos are saved as .webm files in your Downloads folder by default (you can also record a GIF, without sound). WebM plays on YouTube and in most browsers; if a platform asks for MP4, record in a browser that saves MP4 or convert the file.
How to screen record on iPhone or Android
iPhone and iPad
- Open Control Center. If there's no Record button, add it in Control Center settings.
- To include your voice, touch and hold the Record button and turn the microphone on.
- Tap Record and wait for the 3-second countdown.
- To stop, tap the red indicator at the top of the screen, then Stop. The video is saved in Photos.
Apple notes that some apps block recording and you can't record while screen mirroring.
Android
Swipe down twice from the top of the screen and tap Screen record (add the tile with Edit if it's missing). Choose whether to record audio and show touches, then tap Start. Stop it from the notification. Google's Android help says recordings appear in Photos under Collections, On this device, Movies; menus differ between phone makers.
Settings that make screen recordings easier to watch
- Record a window, not the whole screen, so pop-ups and other tabs stay out. Turn on Do Not Disturb first.
- Zoom in. Viewers often watch on a phone. Set your browser or app zoom to 125-150% so text is readable.
- Keep it short. Several 2 to 4 minute recordings beat one 30-minute one, and are easier to redo when something changes.
- Use a headset or a separate microphone for narration; laptop microphones pick up keyboard noise.
- Plan the words. A short script read at about 150 words a minute keeps a demo tight; see how long a video script should be.
Afterwards, cut the dead air at the start and end with the free video trimmer, and add captions with auto subtitles so the video works without sound. A transcript costs 1.5 credits a minute, rounded up, and a burned-in copy 1 credit a minute with a 3-credit minimum, so captions on a 1-minute clip cost 5 credits. For a talking intro without being on camera, an AI avatars presenter can open the video, and you can make a full product demo from the result.
Frequently asked questions
How do I screen record with sound on Windows?
Use Snipping Tool's Record (Windows + Shift + R) and test your audio first, or use a browser recorder such as QuickVeed's, tick Share tab audio or Share system audio in the share window, and keep the microphone on.
What is the shortcut to screen record on a Mac?
Shift-Command-5 opens the Screenshot toolbar with recording options. Stop with Command-Control-Escape or the Stop button in the menu bar.
Is there a free screen recorder without a watermark?
Yes. The built-in recorders on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone and Android add no watermark, and neither does QuickVeed's browser Screen Recorder.
How long can I screen record?
Built-in recorders are limited mainly by disk space. QuickVeed's browser recorder allows up to 30 minutes per recording so the file fits in browser memory.
Can I screen record on my phone in a browser?
No. Phone browsers don't let websites capture the screen. Use iPhone's Control Center or Android's Screen record tile.
Why does my screen recording have no computer sound?
System audio has to be allowed separately: tick Share tab audio or Share system audio in the browser, choose the option in the Mac's toolbar (macOS 27 or later), or turn on device audio on a Chromebook.
