To upscale a video, either resize it with a good scaling filter (free, in FFmpeg or any editor) or run it through an AI upscaler such as Topaz Video, which predicts detail the original doesn't have. Ordinary resizing makes a 720p video fit a 1080p or 4K frame without blockiness, but it can't add detail; only AI upscaling attempts that, with mixed results on faces and text.
This guide shows both, plus when upscaling is worth the time. Commands follow FFmpeg's documentation, and prices are from Topaz Labs' pricing page, read on 26 October 2026. More editing guides: video editing how-tos.
The short answer
For a free upscale, use FFmpeg: ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -vf scale=-2:2160:flags=lanczos -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -c:a copy out.mp4 (4K) or scale=-2:1080 (1080p). That resizes smoothly but adds no real detail. For AI upscaling that sharpens faces and textures, use a tool like Topaz Video ($59 a month, or $299 a year). Upscale only when a deliverable needs the higher resolution.
Key takeaways
- Resizing up doesn't add detail: a 720p video at 1080p is a bigger file with the same information.
- AI upscalers generate plausible detail; check faces, text and logos frame by frame.
- Lanczos is a good free scaling algorithm for upscaling in FFmpeg.
- Upscale once, from the best source, at the end of the edit.
- YouTube recommends 35 to 45 Mbps for 4K at 24 to 30 fps, so an upscaled 4K file is much larger than the 1080p one.
Disclosure: we make QuickVeed and show how to do this in it, along with other ways. Details about other products come from their public pages, checked in October 2026 and linked at the end.
What does upscaling a video actually do?
Upscaling increases a video's pixel dimensions, for example 1280×720 to 1920×1080 or 3840×2160. There are two kinds:
| Resizing (interpolation) | AI upscaling | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Calculates new pixels from their neighbours (bicubic, lanczos) | A trained model predicts detail and texture |
| Adds real detail | No | No, but it invents plausible detail |
| Speed | Fast | Slow; often needs a strong GPU or cloud credits |
| Cost | Free (FFmpeg, editors, browser tools) | Paid software or credits |
| Risks | Soft, slightly blurry look | Waxy skin, warped text, hallucinated detail |
Our free video resizer can output up to 3840 pixels wide, but, as its page says, making a 720p video 1080p makes the file bigger and can't add detail. Resize to the size the platform asks for.
How do you upscale a video for free with FFmpeg?
Use the scale filter with the lanczos algorithm, which FFmpeg's scaler documentation describes as windowed-sinc resampling. To 1080p, keeping the aspect ratio:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf scale=-2:1080:flags=lanczos -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset slow -c:a copy output_1080p.mp4
To 4K:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf scale=-2:2160:flags=lanczos -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset slow -c:a copy output_4k.mp4
The -2 keeps the width proportional and even, which H.264 needs. A light sharpen can help perceived sharpness: add ,unsharp=5:5:0.5 after the scale filter, and lower the amount if edges start to halo. FFmpeg's newer documentation marks flags= as the older way to pick the algorithm in favour of a scaler option, but current releases accept both.
How do you upscale a video with AI?
AI upscalers analyse frames (and often neighbouring frames) and generate the missing detail. Topaz Video is the best-known desktop option. On Topaz Labs' pricing page (26 October 2026) it costs $59 a month, $39 a month with an annual commitment, or $299 a year, with a Pro tier at $699 a year. It includes several upscaling models, SDR-to-HDR and stabilization, unlimited local rendering and 25 cloud credits a month that don't roll over; the standard license covers commercial use only for organisations under $1 million in yearly revenue.
Some video platforms include upscaling on higher tiers, for example HeyGen's Business plan lists 4K export and upscaling. Whatever the tool, render a 10-second test with faces, text and fine texture first, and compare it with the original at 100% zoom.
When is upscaling worth it?
- Worth it: a client or platform requires 4K delivery; older 720p or SD footage needs to sit next to new 4K footage in one edit; archival footage where AI restoration helps.
- Not worth it: social posts (TikTok, Reels and Shorts show 1080×1920); fixing a blurry upload (the cause is usually compression, see why your Instagram video is blurry); making a file look 'HD' for its own sake.
Some creators upscale 1080p to 4K before uploading to YouTube, hoping for better playback quality. YouTube's help pages don't recommend it, so test it on one video before changing your workflow; the file at YouTube's recommended 35 to 45 Mbps for 4K is far larger than at 8 Mbps for 1080p. Our video bitrate calculator shows the sizes, and the best export settings for YouTube lists the rest.
Tips for a cleaner upscale
- Start from the original file, not a downloaded or re-compressed copy.
- Do all other edits first (cut, color, captions as separate files) and upscale last.
- Denoise before upscaling, not after; upscalers enlarge noise and compression blocks.
- Keep the frame rate; changing it at the same time adds artifacts.
- Export with enough bitrate for the new resolution, or the extra pixels are wasted.
After upscaling, compress the video for sharing with our free video compressor, and check the video bitrate guide for each platform. Stabilize shaky footage before upscaling: how to stabilize a video.
Does QuickVeed upscale video?
Not with AI. QuickVeed's free resizer changes dimensions (up to 3840 pixels) without adding detail, which is enough to fit a clip to a platform's frame. For new footage at a set resolution, the AI video generator makes clips at 480p to 1080p depending on the model. QuickVeed plans are $18 a month for 1,000 credits (Starter), $42 for 2,500 (Boost) and $114 for 6,000 (Scale), and a new account gets a 14-day trial with 250 credits, no card needed. That makes a credit worth about 1.7 to 1.9 cents.
Frequently asked questions
Can you upscale 1080p to 4K without losing quality?
You won't lose quality, but resizing adds no detail. AI upscalers can add sharpness and texture, which may or may not look natural.
What is the best free way to upscale a video?
FFmpeg with the lanczos scaler: scale=-2:2160:flags=lanczos for 4K.
Does upscaling improve a blurry video?
Rarely. Blur from focus or heavy compression stays; AI upscalers can sharpen it a little but may create artifacts.
How much does Topaz Video cost?
$59 a month, $39 a month with an annual commitment or $299 a year, per Topaz Labs' pricing page on 26 October 2026; Pro is $699 a year.
Should I upscale videos before uploading to YouTube?
Only if you've tested it on your channel. YouTube doesn't recommend it, and 4K files are several times larger than 1080p.
