Video Marketing Metrics: What to Track and Benchmarks

The video metrics worth tracking at each stage, how YouTube, Meta and LinkedIn each define a view, the few official benchmarks platforms publish (such as YouTube's 2% to 10% impressions CTR), and a simple monthly report.

Video Marketing Metrics: What to Track and Benchmarks

The video metrics that matter are the ones tied to the video's job: reach (impressions, views), attention (watch time, retention, completion), action (click-through rate, conversions) and cost (cost per view or lead for ads). Views alone mislead, because every platform counts them differently: LinkedIn counts a view after 2 seconds, Meta's ThruPlay after 15 seconds or 97% of the video.

Most video marketers still judge success mainly by views (67%) and engagement (63%), and only 32% by sales, according to Wyzowl's 2026 survey. This guide shows what to track instead, using the platforms' own definitions read on 26 October 2026. More in our video marketing guides.

The short answer

Track one metric per goal: impressions and reach for awareness; average view duration, retention and completion rate for attention; click-through rate and conversions for action; cost per ThruPlay or per lead for ads. Compare against your own past videos of similar length. YouTube's one published benchmark: half of channels and videos have an impressions CTR between 2% and 10%.

Key takeaways

  • A 'view' is 2 seconds on LinkedIn and on Meta's continuous-play metric, 3 seconds on Meta's 3-second plays, and 15 seconds or 97% for a ThruPlay.
  • YouTube says half of all channels and videos have an impressions CTR between 2% and 10%.
  • YouTube's retention report shows how many viewers are still watching after the first 30 seconds.
  • Platforms publish few benchmarks; compare against your own videos of similar length.
  • Pick one primary metric per video before you publish, not after.

Disclosure: we make QuickVeed and show how to do this in it, along with other ways. Details about other products come from their public pages, checked in October 2026 and linked at the end.

Which video metrics should you track?

GoalPrimary metricSupporting metricsWhere to find it
AwarenessReach or impressionsViews, cost per 1,000 impressions (ads)Every platform's analytics
AttentionAverage view duration / retentionCompletion rate, ThruPlaysYouTube Studio, Meta Ads Manager
EngagementShares and savesComments, likes, engagement rateNative analytics
TrafficClick-through rateLink clicks, landing-page sessionsYouTube (impressions CTR), LinkedIn, Meta
ConversionLeads or sales from videoCost per lead, assisted conversionsYour analytics or CRM with tagged links

Choose the primary metric before publishing. A top-of-funnel clip judged on sales will always look like a failure, and a demo judged on views will look like a success even if nobody books a call.

What counts as a video view on each platform?

PlatformMetricDefinition
LinkedInVideo viewsWatched for more than 2 seconds (organic and sponsored)
LinkedInImpressionsAt least 50% on screen for 300 milliseconds, or clicked
Meta (Facebook, Instagram ads)15-second ThruPlayPlayed to completion or for at least 15 seconds; for shorter videos, at least 97% played
Meta3-second plays and 2-second continuous playsRelated metrics Meta lists alongside ThruPlay
YouTubeImpressions CTRHow often viewers watched after a registered impression on YouTube
YouTubeAudience retentionHow well each moment held viewers, with intro (after 30 s), top moments, spikes and dips

Because thresholds differ, never add views across platforms into one number. Report each platform separately, or use a common attention metric such as total watch time.

What is a good click-through rate for videos?

On YouTube, half of all channels and videos have an impressions click-through rate between 2% and 10%, according to YouTube's help page. New channels, videos under a week old and videos with fewer than 100 views can fall outside that range. Not every thumbnail view counts as an impression, and impressions on external sites and end screens are excluded. A low CTR with high retention usually means the title and thumbnail undersell a good video: how to write YouTube titles and how to make a YouTube thumbnail help.

How do you measure watch time, retention and completion?

Completion rate is the share of people who started the video and watched to the end (or near it). Platforms report it in different ways: Meta's ThruPlay is the closest ad metric, and YouTube's audience retention report shows the curve rather than one number. YouTube lets you compare a video's retention with your 10 latest videos of similar length and with all YouTube videos of similar length, which is the fairest benchmark available.

Read the curve, not just the average. A steep drop in the first 30 seconds is a hook problem (how to write a hook); dips mid-video show where to cut; spikes show moments people rewatch or share, which make good short clips (long video to Shorts).

What about engagement rate?

Engagement rate divides interactions by reach, followers or views, and the formula changes the answer a lot. What is a good engagement rate? gives benchmarks by platform and our engagement rate calculator does the arithmetic. Weight shares and saves above likes: they show the video was useful enough to pass on or keep.

How do you connect video to leads and sales?

  1. Tag every link in a video description or post with UTM parameters, so your analytics shows which video sent the visit.
  2. Send viewers to one landing page per campaign, not the homepage.
  3. Record 'how did you hear about us?' on forms and sales calls; video often influences without being clicked.
  4. Compare conversion rates of visitors who watched an on-page video with those who didn't, if your player reports it.

Wyzowl's 2026 survey found 83% of video marketers say video directly increased sales, but only 32% measure success by bottom-line sales. Being in that 32% is how you know whether your videos pay. Video marketing statistics has the rest of the survey.

Keep it to one page. If posting and clip-making take the most time, QuickVeed's clips, auto subtitles and scheduling (Boost and Scale plans) cover the production side; the metrics stay in each platform's analytics. QuickVeed plans are $18 a month for 1,000 credits (Starter), $42 for 2,500 (Boost) and $114 for 6,000 (Scale), and a new account gets a 14-day trial with 250 credits, no card needed. That makes a credit worth about 1.7 to 1.9 cents.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important video marketing metric?

The one tied to the video's goal: retention or watch time for attention, CTR for traffic, leads for conversion. Views alone are the weakest signal.

What counts as a view on LinkedIn?

More than 2 seconds of playback, per LinkedIn's post analytics help page.

What is a ThruPlay?

Meta's count of video plays to completion or for at least 15 seconds; for videos shorter than that, at least 97% of the video.

What is a good YouTube click-through rate?

YouTube says half of all channels and videos have an impressions CTR between 2% and 10%.

How do I calculate video completion rate?

Completed views divided by video starts. Use ThruPlays on Meta ads and the retention curve's end point on YouTube.
