YouTube Shorts Size and Length (2026)

YouTube Shorts size and length, checked on YouTube Help in October 2026: square or vertical, up to three minutes, and what happens to longer or wider videos.

YouTube Shorts Size and Length (2026)

The YouTube Shorts size and length rule, as of October 2026, is simple: a video with a square or vertical aspect ratio that is up to three minutes long is treated as a Short. YouTube doesn't publish a required resolution, so the safe export is 1080×1920 pixels (9:16) at the frame rate you filmed in.

This guide covers the exact rules from YouTube Help, the export settings that hold up on phones, what happens when a Short runs over a minute or a little over three, and how to get a vertical Short out of a long horizontal video.

The short answer

As of October 2026, YouTube counts any video up to 3 minutes long with a square (1:1) or vertical (9:16) aspect ratio as a Short. YouTube doesn't publish a fixed resolution, so export 1080×1920 for vertical or 1080×1080 for square. A 16:9 video, or one longer than 3 minutes, is a regular video.

Key takeaways

  • Shape decides it: square or vertical, up to 3 minutes, becomes a Short. Wider than square is a regular video.
  • Export 1080×1920 (9:16) MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. It's the standard vertical size every phone app uses.
  • A Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked worldwide until the claim is resolved.
  • Keep text and faces away from the bottom of the frame, where the title, buttons and channel name sit.

Disclosure: we make QuickVeed and show how to do this in it, along with other ways. Details about other products come from their public pages, checked in October 2026 and linked at the end.

YouTube Shorts size and length rules (October 2026)

YouTube's help page on Shorts says videos with a square or vertical aspect ratio up to three minutes long are categorized as Shorts. It also says that if you don't want a video to be a Short, you should use a wider ratio such as 16:9. That one sentence answers most size questions: the shape and the length decide whether a video is a Short, not a setting you pick.

SpecYouTube ShortsSource
Maximum length3 minutesYouTube Help, Shorts up to three minutes
Aspect ratioSquare (1:1) or vertical (9:16 is standard)YouTube Help, Shorts up to three minutes
Recommended resolutionNot published; 1080×1920 is the common choiceIndustry practice
File size limitSame as any upload: 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is lessYouTube Help, uploads
Wider than square (e.g. 16:9)Treated as a regular long videoYouTube Help, Shorts up to three minutes

Two things are not on YouTube's list, so treat claims about them with care: a minimum length and a required frame rate. Export at the frame rate you shot (24, 25, 30 or 60 fps) and don't convert it.

Regular uploads longer than 15 minutes need a verified account. That rule doesn't touch Shorts, which stop at 3 minutes anyway, but it explains why a long horizontal video can fail to upload while a Short goes through.

The best export settings for a Short

These settings work for Shorts and also for TikTok and Instagram Reels, so you can make one master file and post it in all three places.

SettingUse thisWhy
Resolution1080×1920 (vertical) or 1080×1080 (square)Sharp on every phone, small enough to upload fast
Container and codecsMP4, H.264 video, AAC audioPlays and processes everywhere
Frame rateSame as the source, usually 30 or 60 fpsConverting frame rates adds judder
BitrateAbout 8-12 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fpsEnough detail; YouTube re-encodes anyway
AudioStereo, 48 kHz, peaks below -1 dBAvoids clipping after YouTube's processing

The bitrate range is a working figure, not a YouTube rule. If you want to check what bitrate a file size gives you, the free video bitrate calculator does the maths. For other shapes, the video aspect ratio calculator gives you the exact pixel size for any ratio.

Leave room for the interface

On the Shorts player, the title, channel name and audio credit sit over the bottom of the video, and the like, comment and share buttons sit down the right side. YouTube doesn't publish pixel safe zones for Shorts, so a cautious rule is to keep captions and key text in the middle of the frame, well clear of the bottom fifth and the right edge. Captions placed in the middle third of the screen are almost never covered.

What happens with longer, wider or claimed Shorts

  • Over 3 minutes: the video is a regular upload, even if it's vertical. It appears on your channel's Videos tab and plays in the normal player with bars on each side on desktop.
  • 16:9 or wider: a regular video at any length. YouTube's own advice is to use 16:9 if you don't want something treated as a Short.
  • Over 1 minute with a copyright claim: YouTube says any Short over one minute with an active copyright claim of any type is blocked globally. It won't play, won't be recommended and can't be monetized, but there's no penalty to your channel. Remove the claimed content or dispute the claim and it becomes viewable again.
  • 1 minute or less with a claim: YouTube says nothing changed for these, so a short clip with licensed music behaves as it always did.

The copyright rule is the one that catches people. If your Short uses commercial music and runs past 60 seconds, cut it under a minute or swap the track for something you have the rights to before you post.

How long should a YouTube Short be

The limit is three minutes, but the limit isn't a target. A Short is watched in a feed where the next video is one swipe away, so length should match how much you have to say.

Type of ShortTypical lengthNotes
One tip, joke or reaction15-30 secondsLoops well; viewers often watch twice
Podcast or interview moment30-60 secondsLong enough for a full thought; see how long a podcast clip should be
Tutorial or list45-90 secondsNumber the steps on screen
Story, case study or explainer1-3 minutesNeeds a strong hook and no dead air

Whatever the length, the first two or three seconds decide whether someone keeps watching. Open on the payoff or the question, not on a logo or a greeting. Our guide to writing a hook for short videos has examples.

Shorts, Reels and TikTok side by side

If you post the same vertical video in three places, these are the numbers that matter, as each platform states them in October 2026:

YouTube ShortsInstagram ReelsTikTok
ShapeSquare or vertical1.91:1 to 9:169:16 recommended
LengthUp to 3 minutesAt least 3 minutes for uploads3 minutes for every creator; 5 or 10 on some accounts

A 60-second, 1080×1920 MP4 with burned-in captions placed in the middle of the frame works on all three. Full details are in our guides to Instagram Reels dimensions and TikTok video size.

How to make a Short from a long horizontal video

Most business Shorts start life as a webinar, podcast or demo filmed in 16:9. You have two main ways to turn that into a vertical clip.

  1. Crop by hand in an editor. Put the 16:9 video on a 1080×1920 canvas, scale it up until it fills the height, and move it so the speaker stays in frame. Free editors such as CapCut and DaVinci Resolve can do this; it's slow if the speaker moves or there are two people.
  2. Use an AI clipping tool that finds the best moments, crops to whoever is talking and adds captions. That's what QuickVeed's Podcast to Clips does, below. Other tools in this space include Opus Clip; see our fair roundup of Opus Clip alternatives.

For the step-by-step version of the manual method, read how to convert horizontal video to vertical without losing the speaker.

Doing it in QuickVeed

QuickVeed's Podcast to Clips turns a long video into ready-to-post vertical Shorts. Here are the real steps and costs.

  1. Open Podcast to Clips and upload your video (a podcast, interview or webinar up to 3 hours). The upload keeps going if you change page.
  2. Optionally say what the clips should be about, for example "pricing tips".
  3. The AI transcribes the video (1.5 credits a minute, rounded up: 2 credits for a 1-minute video, 15 for 10 minutes, 90 for an hour) and picks 3 to 10 stand-alone moments of 15-90 seconds, each with a hook title, a reason and a 0-100 score.
  4. For each clip choose 9:16 for Shorts, a crop that follows whoever is speaking or a fixed position, and one of 11 caption styles in any language.
  5. The hook title shows on screen for the first 4 seconds, long pauses are shortened and ums and uhs cut automatically. Your brand kit's colour and logo are added.
  6. Click Make all clips. Each clip costs 3 credits, everything included. Download them all as a ZIP, or Post or Schedule to YouTube and other networks (social posting is on the Boost plan with 3 accounts and Scale with 10).

Every clip QuickVeed makes is 90 seconds or shorter, so it stays under the 3-minute Shorts limit, though clips over 60 seconds still need cleared music. If you already have a finished vertical video and only need captions, Captions & subtitles burns them in from 3 credits.

Frequently asked questions

What is the size of a YouTube Short?

YouTube doesn't publish a required resolution. Any square or vertical video up to 3 minutes counts as a Short. Use 1080×1920 pixels (9:16) for vertical or 1080×1080 for square.

How long can a YouTube Short be in 2026?

Up to three minutes, according to YouTube Help (checked October 2026). A vertical video longer than three minutes is uploaded as a regular video.

Can a YouTube Short be 16:9?

No. YouTube says to use a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9 if you don't want a video categorized as a Short, so a 16:9 upload is a regular video.

Why was my Short over 1 minute blocked?

YouTube blocks Shorts longer than one minute that have an active copyright claim of any type. Remove the claimed content, such as a music track, or dispute the claim, and the Short becomes viewable again. There's no channel penalty.

Is 720p OK for YouTube Shorts?

It uploads and plays, but text and faces look soft on modern phones. Export 1080×1920 if your source allows it.
