Instagram Reels Dimensions and Length (2026)

Instagram Reels dimensions and length, checked on Instagram Help and Meta's Ads Guide in October 2026, with export settings and safe zones that keep captions visible.

Instagram Reels Dimensions and Length (2026)

The best Instagram Reels dimensions, as of October 2026, are 1080×1920 pixels in a vertical 9:16 ratio. Instagram accepts reels anywhere from 1.91:1 (wide) to 9:16 (tall), with a minimum frame rate of 30 fps and a minimum resolution of 720 pixels, but only 9:16 fills the whole screen.

Below are the official numbers from Instagram Help and Meta's Ads Guide, the length rules for organic reels and reel ads, the safe zones that keep your captions clear of buttons, and a quick way to make reels from a longer video.

The short answer

As of October 2026, make Instagram Reels 1080×1920 pixels (9:16), at 30 fps or more, as an MP4 with H.264 video. Instagram accepts ratios from 1.91:1 to 9:16 and needs at least 720 pixels. Uploaded reels can run at least 3 minutes; reel ads can run up to 15 minutes. Keep text out of the top 14% and bottom 35%.

Key takeaways

  • 9:16 at 1080×1920 is the size to use. Wider reels play with empty space around them.
  • Instagram's minimums: 30 fps and 720 pixels. Below that, quality suffers or the upload is rejected.
  • Meta's ad guide recommends keeping the top 14%, bottom 35% and 6% on each side free of text and logos.
  • Long reels are possible, but short ones are easier to watch to the end. Check your app's length selector for your account's limit.

Disclosure: we make QuickVeed and show how to do this in it, along with other ways. Details about other products come from their public pages, checked in October 2026 and linked at the end.

Instagram Reels dimensions (October 2026)

Instagram's help page on reel resolution and size says reels can use any aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16, with a minimum frame rate of 30 fps and a minimum resolution of 720 pixels. The same page gives a cover photo size of 420×654 pixels (1:1.55).

Meta's ad guide recommends 1440×2560 for reel ads. For organic reels, 1080×1920 is the common choice and looks the same on a phone; use 1440×2560 only if your source is sharper than 1080p and you want the extra headroom.

The grid on your profile shows a vertical crop of each reel, so check that the centre of your cover frame still makes sense when the top and bottom are trimmed.

How long can an Instagram Reel be

Length is where most guides go out of date. Here is what we could confirm in October 2026:

  • Uploaded reels: Instagram raised the limit for uploaded reels to three minutes in January 2025, in a change announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri and widely reported at the time.
  • Longer reels: some accounts may see a longer limit in the app, and it can depend on your account and app version. Open the reel camera and check the length selector rather than trusting a number from a blog, including this one.
  • Reel ads: Meta's Ads Guide lists a duration of 0 seconds to 15 minutes for Instagram Reels ads.

What the limit allows and what works are different questions. A reel is shown to people who don't follow you yet, in a feed they swipe through quickly, so most business reels land between 15 and 90 seconds. Use longer reels for tutorials or stories that genuinely need the time, and cut every pause.

Reel typeTypical length

Single tip or before-and-after15-30 seconds
Podcast or interview moment30-60 seconds
How-to or list45-90 seconds
Story or case study60 seconds to 3 minutes

Reels safe zones: where to put captions and text

On a reel, Instagram places your username, caption and audio label at the bottom, and the like, comment and share buttons on the right. Anything under those is hard to read.

Meta's Ads Guide for Instagram Reels ads recommends leaving at least 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side free of text, logos and other key elements. On a 1080×1920 frame that works out to:

AreaShare of framePixels on 1080×1920
Top margin14%About 270 px
Bottom margin35%About 670 px
Left and right margins6% eachAbout 65 px each
Safe area left overAbout 51% of the heightAbout 950×980 px in the middle

The figures come from the ads guide, but the same buttons appear on organic reels, so it's a sensible rule for every reel. Put captions just above the middle of the frame, and keep faces in the upper half.

Export settings that upload cleanly

  1. Set the canvas to 1080×1920. If your clip is 16:9, crop or reframe it to fill the canvas rather than adding blurred bars.
  2. Keep the frame rate of your source if it's 30 fps or higher. Instagram's minimum is 30 fps, so convert 24 or 25 fps footage only if the upload complains.
  3. Export MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. A bitrate around 8-12 Mbps at 1080p is plenty; Instagram compresses the file again.
  4. Burn in captions. Many people scroll with the sound off, and burned-in captions show everywhere the reel is shared.
  5. Upload from your phone's camera roll or from a scheduler. If quality drops, check the app's setting for uploading at the highest quality.

The bitrate figure is a working range, not an Instagram rule. To work out the pixel size for any other ratio, use the free video aspect ratio calculator, and see every platform side by side in our social media video size guide. For captions that stay readable, our guide to the best caption styles for Reels and TikTok compares the options.

Common Reels upload problems and how to fix them

Most reel problems come from the file, not the app. Check these before you re-export:

ProblemLikely causeFix
Reel looks soft or blockySource under 720 px, or a low bitrate exportExport 1080×1920 at 8 Mbps or more
Upload rejected or stuckFrame rate under 30 fps, unusual codec, or a very large fileExport MP4 with H.264 and AAC at 30 fps
Black or blurred bars around the videoWider ratio than 9:16Reframe to 9:16 instead of letterboxing
Captions hidden behind buttonsText placed in the bottom thirdMove captions to the middle of the frame
Audio out of sync after uploadVariable frame rate from a phone screen recordingRe-export at a constant frame rate
Profile grid crops the cover badlySubject near the top or bottomPick a cover frame with the subject centred

Two habits prevent most of these. First, decide on 9:16 before you film or edit, not at export. Second, preview the export on a phone with the caption and buttons in mind before you post; what looks fine on a laptop can be covered on a phone.

One file for Reels, Shorts and TikTok

A 1080×1920 MP4 at 30 fps, under 90 seconds, with captions in the middle third, works on all three platforms. YouTube treats vertical videos up to 3 minutes as Shorts and TikTok lets every creator post 3 minutes, so a reel within those limits can be posted everywhere without changes. Remove any visible watermark from another app before cross-posting, and use music you have the rights to on each platform. See YouTube Shorts size and length and TikTok video size for each platform's details.

Doing it in QuickVeed

QuickVeed makes vertical videos at the right size, so you only need to post them.

  • Reels from a long video: in Podcast to Clips, upload a podcast, interview or webinar (up to 3 hours). The AI transcribes it (1.5 credits a minute, rounded up) and suggests 3-10 moments of 15-90 seconds. Pick 9:16, a crop that follows whoever is speaking, and one of 11 caption styles. Each clip costs 3 credits; post or schedule it to Instagram from QuickVeed on the Boost plan (3 social accounts) or Scale (10), or download a ZIP.
  • Product reels: UGC video ads turns a product photo into a 9:16 video presented by one of 8 fictional AI creators. A 20-second Standard ad with captions costs 132 credits.
  • Captions on a finished reel: Captions & subtitles transcribes it, lets you fix every line and burns captions in at the bottom, middle or top. Choose middle for reels so captions stay clear of the buttons. A 1-minute reel costs 2 credits for the transcript and 3 for the burned-in copy.

New accounts get a 14-day trial with 75 credits, no card needed, which covers several test reels.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an Instagram Reel be?

1080×1920 pixels in a 9:16 ratio. Instagram accepts ratios from 1.91:1 to 9:16 at 720 pixels or more and 30 fps or more, but 9:16 is the only shape that fills the screen.

What is the Instagram Reels aspect ratio?

9:16 is the standard. Instagram Help says reels can be any ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16.

How long can Instagram Reels be in 2026?

Uploaded reels can be at least three minutes, a limit Instagram set in January 2025, and some accounts may see a longer limit. Reel ads can run from 0 seconds to 15 minutes, per Meta's Ads Guide. Check the length selector in your app for your own limit.

What is the Instagram Reels cover size?

Instagram Help gives 420×654 pixels, a 1:1.55 ratio. Keep the subject in the centre, because the profile grid crops the cover.

Why is my reel blurry after uploading?

Usually the source was under 720 pixels or 30 fps, or the app uploaded at a reduced quality on a slow connection. Export 1080×1920 at 30 fps or more and upload on Wi-Fi.

Can I post a 16:9 video as a reel?

Yes, Instagram accepts ratios down to 1.91:1, but a 16:9 reel fills only a strip of the screen. Reframe it to 9:16 for better results.
