Reddit Video Size Limit: Length, File Size, Format

Reddit's video limits from its own help centre in November 2026: 15 minutes per post (30 with Premium), 3-minute video comments under 1 GB, video ad specs, what Reddit doesn't publish, and how to trim or compress a video to fit.

Reddit Video Size Limit: Length, File Size, Format

Reddit lets you upload videos up to 15 minutes long in a post, or 30 minutes with Reddit Premium, according to Reddit's own help centre. Videos in comments can be 2 seconds to 3 minutes long and must be under 1 GB (Reddit recommends under 300 MB), and video ads can be up to 15 minutes and 1 GB as MP4 or MOV. Reddit's help centre doesn't publish a separate file-size cap for videos in posts.

Many guides still quote a 100 MB limit for Reddit videos. Reddit's own pages don't use that number anywhere we could find, and every file-size limit Reddit does publish today is 1 GB, so treat 100 MB as outdated. Below is each limit with its source, what to do when an upload fails, and how to trim or compress a video to fit. More platforms are in our video specs by platform.

The short answer

Video posts on Reddit can be up to 15 minutes long (30 minutes with Reddit Premium). Video comments: 2 seconds to 3 minutes, under 1 GB, with under 300 MB recommended, and only in communities that allow them. Video ads: MP4 or MOV, up to 1 GB, up to 15 minutes (60 seconds or less recommended), in 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9. Reddit doesn't publish a file-size cap for post uploads, so keep post videos under 1 GB, as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, to be safe.

Key takeaways

  • Post length limit: 15 minutes, or 30 minutes with Reddit Premium (Reddit Help, checked 1 November 2026).
  • Video comments: 2 seconds to 3 minutes, less than 1 GB, 300 MB recommended; communities can switch them off, and they're never allowed in NSFW communities.
  • Video ads: MP4 or MOV up to 1 GB, up to 15 minutes, 60 seconds or less recommended, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9.
  • Reddit publishes no file-size cap for post videos; the old 100 MB figure isn't on any Reddit page today.
  • At 15 minutes, 1 GB averages about 8.9 Mbps, which is plenty for 1080p, so length is usually the limit you hit first.

What is Reddit's video size limit?

Reddit's video size limit depends on where the video goes. These are the figures Reddit publishes on its own help centre and advertising site, read on 1 November 2026:

Where the video goesLengthFile sizeOther specs Reddit gives
Post (standard account)Up to 15 minutesNot publishedNone published; MP4 (H.264, AAC) is the safe choice
Post (Reddit Premium)Up to 30 minutesNot publishedSame as above
Comment2 seconds to 3 minutes (uploaded or recorded in the app)Under 1 GB; under 300 MB recommendedAt least 50×50 pixels and 1 KB/s bitrate
Video adUp to 15 minutes; 60 seconds or less recommendedUp to 1 GBMP4 or MOV; 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9

The Premium figure comes from Reddit's Premium page, which lists a "video upload length of 30 minutes (up from 15 for non-premium users)"; Reddit's changelog of 4 November 2025 announced the same change. Reddit doesn't say what file size a post video may be. In practice, keep post videos under 1 GB, the limit Reddit sets for both comment videos and ads.

How long can a Reddit video be?

A Reddit video can be 15 minutes long in a post, 30 minutes if you pay for Reddit Premium, and 3 minutes in a comment. Ads can technically run 15 minutes, but Reddit recommends 60 seconds or less.

Length matters more than size on Reddit for most people. 1 GB is 8,000 megabits; spread over 15 minutes (900 seconds) that's about 8.9 Mbps, which is enough for clean 1080p video. A phone recording at a higher bitrate can go over, though, so check both numbers before you upload: the free video duration calculator reads a file's length and the video bitrate calculator works out its bitrate, both free, runs in your browser and never uploads your file.

Can you post videos in Reddit comments?

Yes, if the community allows it. Reddit's help centre says videos in comments are only available in safe-for-work communities, that NSFW video comments are blocked, and that moderators can turn the option off or limit it to moderators and approved users. If you don't see the video icon in the comment box, the community has switched it off.

  1. On reddit.com, click the video icon in the comment box; in the iOS or Android app, tap Add a Comment and then the video icon.
  2. Choose a video from your device or record one: up to 3 minutes, less than 1 GB (under 300 MB recommended).
  3. Write the rest of your comment and post it.

GIFs in comments work differently: you pick them from a GIPHY search, and communities can also allow GIFs uploaded from your device. Reddit doesn't publish size limits for either.

Reddit video ad specs

Reddit for Business lists one set of creative specs for video ads, whether they run in the feed or in conversations: MP4 or MOV, up to 1 GB, in 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9, up to 15 minutes, with 60 seconds or less recommended. Image ads, for comparison, take JPEG or PNG up to 20 MB, 1:1 or 16:9, from 1200×628 pixels.

Reddit's ads help centre needs a login to read, so these are the figures from its public ad types page. If you make vertical videos for other platforms, note that 9:16 isn't in that list; 4:5 is the tallest option, so crop or resize a vertical clip to 4:5 with the free video resizer. For other ad platforms, see Facebook video ad specs and TikTok ad specs.

Why won't Reddit upload my video?

Most failed Reddit video uploads come down to length, the community's settings or the file itself:

How to make a video fit Reddit's limits

Fit the length first, then the size:

  1. Trim the length. Cut slow starts, setup and endings with the free video trimmer (MP4 or WebM up to 500 MB; the part you keep can be up to 20 minutes). For a comment, get it under 3 minutes; for a post, under 15.
  2. Compress if the file is big. The free video compressor takes MP4 or WebM files up to 500 MB and 10 minutes and has three sizes: Light (up to 1080p, about 23 MB a minute), Smaller (720p, about 12 MB a minute) and Smallest (480p, about 6 MB a minute). A 3-minute comment video on Light comes out around 70 MB, well under Reddit's 300 MB recommendation.
  3. For longer posts, use HandBrake or FFmpeg and aim for a bitrate under 8 Mbps at 15 minutes. How to compress a video to 100 MB (or any size) shows the bitrate maths and an FFmpeg command for an exact size.
  4. Check the format. The browser tools save MP4 where your browser can record it and WebM otherwise. For ads, which take MP4 or MOV only, make sure you use an MP4.

If you're new to compression, how to compress a video without losing quality explains which settings change the size and which change the look, and how big a 1-minute video is gives sizes per minute at common settings.

Captions for Reddit videos

Reddit's help centre says automatic closed captions are available for some videos in its mobile apps, depending on length, post type and audio quality. If your video must work with the sound off, burn the captions in: QuickVeed's auto subtitles transcribe at 1.5 credits a minute and burn styled captions into videos up to 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the max video length on Reddit?

15 minutes for a video post, or 30 minutes with Reddit Premium. Videos in comments can be up to 3 minutes.

What is Reddit's video file size limit?

Reddit publishes 1 GB for video comments (300 MB recommended) and for video ads. Its help centre doesn't give a file-size cap for post videos; keeping them under 1 GB is the safe choice.

Is the Reddit video limit 100 MB?

Not according to Reddit's own pages today. The 100 MB figure appears in older third-party guides; Reddit's current published limits are 1 GB.

Can I upload a 4K video to Reddit?

Reddit doesn't publish a resolution limit for posts. A 4K file reaches large sizes quickly, so most people export 1080p, which also uploads and processes faster.

What aspect ratio do Reddit video ads use?

1:1, 4:5 or 16:9, per Reddit for Business. Vertical 9:16 isn't listed, so crop vertical videos to 4:5.

Why can't I add a video to a Reddit comment?

The community has video comments turned off, limits them to moderators and approved users, or is marked NSFW, where video comments aren't allowed.
