Telegram Video Size Limit (and How to Send Bigger Files)

Telegram's file size limits from its own FAQ and API docs: 2 GB per file, 4 GB with Premium, 50 MB for bots, how many minutes of video that holds, and how to send something bigger.

Telegram Video Size Limit (and How to Send Bigger Files)

Telegram lets you send videos and other files up to 2 GB each, or 4 GB with Telegram Premium, according to Telegram's FAQ. There's no length limit, only the file size. Bots are stricter: the Bot API sends files up to 50 MB. Anyone can download a 4 GB file a Premium user sends.

More on this topic: Video specs by platform, every guide in one place.

The 4 GB Premium limit dates from June 2022, and both figures still appear in Telegram's FAQ today. Here's how much video that holds, and how to send a bigger file.

The short answer

Telegram: up to 2 GB per video or file on a free account, 4 GB with Premium. No limit on length or on how many files you send. Bots: 50 MB per file (2,000 MB on a self-hosted Bot API server). At 8 Mbps, 2 GB holds about 32 minutes of 1080p video; at 3 Mbps, about 85 minutes. For anything bigger, compress it, split it, or send a cloud link.

Key takeaways

  • Free accounts: 2 GB per file. Premium: 4 GB per file.
  • There's no video length limit; only file size counts.
  • Free users can download 4 GB files that Premium users send them.
  • Bots can only send 50 MB per file through the standard Bot API.
  • A 1080p video at a sensible bitrate fits 30 to 90 minutes into 2 GB.

What is Telegram's video size limit?

Telegram's video size limit is 2 GB per file, or 4 GB with Telegram Premium. Telegram's FAQ says you can send files of any type, up to 2 GB each, or 4 GB with Premium, and its Premium FAQ lists 4 GB file uploads as a Premium feature. Checked on 26 October 2026 against telegram.org and core.telegram.org.

Telegram's API documentation describes the same limit in another way: uploads go in parts of up to 512 KB, and its example configuration allows 4,000 parts for free accounts and 8,000 for Premium. That works out to 2,000 MB and 4,000 MB, which is why a file a little under 2 GB on your disk can still be refused.

How long a video can you send on Telegram?

You can send a video of any length on Telegram, as long as the file stays under 2 GB (4 GB with Premium). How many minutes fit depends on the bitrate:

QualityBitrate (video + 128 kbps audio)Fits in 2 GBFits in 4 GB (Premium)
Phone 4K recording50 Mbpsabout 5 minutesabout 10 minutes
High-quality 1080p8 Mbpsabout 32 minutesabout 65 minutes
Good 1080p5 Mbpsabout 52 minutesabout 104 minutes
Light 1080p3 Mbpsabout 85 minutesabout 170 minutes
720p1.5 Mbpsabout 2 hours 40 minutesabout 5 hours 30 minutes

Telegram's own launch post described 4 GB as enough for 4 hours of 1080p video, which assumes a low bitrate of around 2 Mbps. Phone footage is usually much heavier: a few minutes of 4K is enough to hit the free limit. Work out your own numbers with the free video bitrate calculator or the chart in how big a 1-minute video is.

How do you send a video bigger than 2 GB on Telegram?

You send a video bigger than 2 GB on Telegram by compressing it, splitting it, upgrading to Premium, or sharing a link. Pick by how much you need to save:

  1. Compress it. Re-encoding a 4K phone clip to 1080p at 3 to 8 Mbps usually cuts it by 80% or more. The free video compressor runs in your browser and never uploads your file; Light keeps up to 1080p at about 3 Mbps, roughly 23 MB a minute.
  2. Trim what you don't need. The free video trimmer cuts the start and end without re-encoding the rest.
  3. Split it. Cut it into parts under 2 GB and send them in order.
  4. Use Premium. It raises the limit to 4 GB, and the person you send to doesn't need Premium to download it.
  5. Send a link. Upload to a cloud drive and share the link in the chat.

If quality matters, compress with H.265 (HEVC) instead of H.264: similar quality at a smaller size, though some older devices play it less smoothly. H.264 vs H.265 explains the trade-off, and the video bitrate guide lists sensible bitrates.

Does Telegram compress videos?

Telegram's FAQ doesn't describe how it processes videos sent as media. In practice, the apps offer two ways to send: as a video, which plays in the chat and may be re-encoded to a smaller size, or as a file (document), which sends the original untouched. Both count against the same 2 GB limit. If you need the original quality, for example to hand a client a master file, send it as a file; if you want it to play instantly in the chat, send it as a video.

Either way, a file you compress yourself at a known bitrate usually looks better than one the app shrinks for you, because you choose the trade-off.

What is the Telegram bot file size limit?

The Telegram bot file size limit is 50 MB per upload and 20 MB per download through the standard Bot API. Telegram's Bot API documentation says bots can currently send video files of up to 50 MB, and that a file passed by URL is limited to 20 MB. A bot running its own local Bot API server can upload files up to 2,000 MB and download without a size limit.

Bot methodLimit
Send a video, document or audio (upload)50 MB
Send a file by URL20 MB (5 MB for photos)
Download a file (getFile)20 MB
Local Bot API server upload2,000 MB

50 MB holds about 50 seconds of 1080p at 8 Mbps or about 2 minutes at 3 Mbps, so bots that deliver video usually compress hard or send a link.

How does Telegram compare with WhatsApp, Discord and email?

Telegram's per-file limit is generous compared with most chat apps and email:

AppWhere we cover the limit
TelegramThis page: 2 GB, 4 GB with Premium
WhatsAppWhatsApp video size limit
Discordhow to make a video small enough for Discord
Gmail and Outlookhow to compress a video for email

If you send the same video through several apps, compress once to the smallest limit you need, then use that file everywhere.

Should you add subtitles before sharing a video on Telegram?

If the video goes to a channel or group that watches muted, or to people who speak another language, burn subtitles in, since chat apps don't load separate subtitle files. QuickVeed's auto subtitles transcribe a video, translate it into 32 languages, and burn captions per language; how to add subtitles in multiple languages covers the workflow.
