The resolution is what your camera sends to this browser. Video apps often use less, depending on your connection.

In short

To test your webcam, press Test my webcam and allow camera access when your browser asks. If the picture appears, the camera works. The tool shows the resolution your camera sends to the browser (for example 1920 × 1080), the frame rate it measures over two seconds, the aspect ratio and the camera's name. If it fails, the message says why: access blocked, no camera found, or the camera busy in another app such as Zoom or Teams.

FAQ

Questions about the Webcam Test

How do I test my webcam?
Press Test my webcam and allow camera access. If you see yourself, the camera works. The panel shows its resolution and frame rate so you can check its quality too.
Why is my webcam not working?
The usual causes are blocked access (click the camera icon in the address bar and allow it), another app using the camera (close Zoom, Teams or FaceTime), a privacy switch or cover on the camera, or a system setting that blocks browsers from the camera. The tool's message names the error it got.
Is my video recorded or uploaded?
No. The picture is shown in your browser only and stops when you press Stop or leave the page. A snapshot is saved only when you press Save snapshot, straight to your device.
Why is the resolution lower than my camera's spec?
Browsers get the formats the camera driver offers, and some cameras only reach their top resolution at a lower frame rate or in their own app. With Ask for the highest resolution on, the tool requests up to 4K and shows what the camera actually delivers.
What frame rate should a webcam have?
30 frames per second looks smooth for calls and recordings. Many webcams drop to 15 fps or less in dim light, so if the measured rate is low, add light in front of you.
