Vimeo accepts videos up to 24 hours long and advises keeping each file under 200 GB. Storage depends on the plan: the Free plan allows unlimited public, non-embeddable videos but only 3 GB of embeddable or private ones, while Starter, Standard and Advanced include 2 TB, 4 TB and 7 TB of total (lifetime) storage, according to Vimeo's help centre.

Older guides still quote weekly upload quotas and video counts that only apply to legacy accounts, so this page sets out what Vimeo's help pages say today, which limits apply to your account, and the export settings that upload cleanly.
The short answer
Vimeo upload limits: up to 24 hours per video; Vimeo advises files under 200 GB. Free: unlimited public, non-embeddable videos, 3 GB for embeddable and private ones, 1 TB of bandwidth a month. Starter 2 TB, Standard 4 TB, Advanced 7 TB of lifetime storage (accounts created from 17 June 2024). Export MP4 with H.264, constant frame rate, 10-20 Mbps for 1080p, AAC audio at 48 kHz.
Key takeaways
- Length: Vimeo doesn't support uploads longer than 24 hours.
- File size: Vimeo advises keeping files under 200 GB for a successful upload.
- The Free plan's 3 GB cap counts only embeddable and non-public videos; public, non-embeddable uploads are unlimited.
- Paid storage is total, not monthly: it doesn't reset. Weekly quotas only apply to some legacy Plus and Pro plans.
- Accounts created before 17 June 2024 may have different limits, such as a video count.
What is the Vimeo upload limit?
The Vimeo upload limit is 24 hours of video per file, and Vimeo advises keeping files under 200 GB. Beyond that, the limit that matters is your plan's storage. Checked on 26 October 2026 against Vimeo's help centre:
| Limit | What Vimeo says |
|---|---|
| Longest video | Uploads longer than 24 hours aren't supported |
| File size | Keep files under 200 GB for a successful upload (advice, not a stated hard cap) |
| Formats | Common formats such as MP4 and MOV are preferred; unsupported files show an Invalid File error |
| Frame rate | Anything above 60 fps is reduced |
| Resolution | 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision support is listed on every plan, Free included |
Older accounts on Starter (from before 17 June 2024) are an exception: Vimeo's Starter page says they're capped at 60 videos, with a maximum file size of up to 250 GB per video.
How much can you upload on Vimeo's Free plan?
On Vimeo's Free plan you can upload unlimited public, non-embeddable videos, plus 3 GB of embeddable or non-public videos. That split is the part most guides miss: the 3 GB counts only videos you embed on a site or keep private.
| Free plan | Limit |
|---|---|
| Public, non-embeddable videos | Unlimited |
| Embeddable and non-public videos | 3 GB of storage |
| Bandwidth | 1 TB a month for embeddable and non-public videos; unlimited for public, non-embeddable |
| Screen and webcam recordings | Up to 30 minutes each, counted in storage |
| Accounts made before 17 June 2024 | May have different storage limits |
So if you only want a public Vimeo page, the Free plan doesn't cap how much you upload. If you want to embed the player on your website, 3 GB goes quickly: about 40 minutes of 1080p at 10 Mbps. To embed without filling it, see how to embed a video on a website.
How much storage does each Vimeo plan include?
Vimeo's paid plans include 2 TB (Starter), 4 TB (Standard) or 7 TB (Advanced) of total storage, according to Vimeo's plans page. Prices below are per seat, from Vimeo's pricing page on 26 October 2026:
| Plan | Billed yearly (per month) | Billed monthly | Storage | Bandwidth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | Unlimited public; 3 GB embeddable or private | 1 TB a month |
| Starter | $12 | $20 | 2 TB | 2 TB a month |
| Standard | $25 | $41 | 4 TB | 2 TB a month |
| Advanced | $75 | $125 | 7 TB | 2 TB a month |
| Enterprise | Contact sales | Contact sales | Custom | Custom |
The storage is lifetime, not monthly. Vimeo's page on upload quotas says total storage for Starter, Standard and Advanced accounts created on or after 17 June 2024 “does not reset or renew”: delete old videos to free space. Weekly upload quotas only apply to a few legacy Plus and Pro plans, and accounts on Starter, Standard or Advanced from before that date are limited by number of videos instead.
How many hours of video fit in Vimeo storage?
How many hours fit depends on bitrate, since file size is bitrate multiplied by length. At Vimeo's recommended bitrates:
| Export | Bitrate | Size of 1 hour | Hours in 3 GB | Hours in 2 TB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | about 2.3 GB | about 1.3 | about 880 |
| 1080p | 10 Mbps | about 4.5 GB | about 0.7 (40 min) | about 440 |
| 1080p, high | 20 Mbps | about 9 GB | about 0.3 (20 min) | about 220 |
| 4K | 45 Mbps | about 20 GB | about 9 minutes | about 98 |
Vimeo keeps the file you upload, so storage is spent on your file size, not on what viewers stream. A 1080p export at 10 Mbps instead of a 50 Mbps camera original is a fifth of the size. Work out any combination with the free video bitrate calculator, or see how big a 1-minute video is.
What export settings does Vimeo recommend?
Vimeo recommends H.264, Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) or H.265 video at your native, constant frame rate, with variable bitrate. Its compression guidelines list these targets:
| Resolution | Vimeo's bitrate range |
|---|---|
| SD | 2-5 Mbps |
| 720p | 5-10 Mbps |
| 1080p | 10-20 Mbps |
| 2K | 20-30 Mbps |
| 4K | 30-60 Mbps |
| 8K | 50-80 Mbps |
- Audio: AAC-LC at 320 kbps constant bitrate, 48 kHz.
- Scan: progressive (deinterlace first), square pixels (1:1 pixel aspect ratio).
- Colour: BT.709 for standard video, BT.2020 for HDR, with HDR in PQ or HLG.
- Quality: a CRF of 18 or lower if your encoder uses constant rate factor; 10-bit or higher if you can.
A ProRes upload looks best but uses several times the storage of H.264; ProRes vs H.264 has the numbers. For most business video, H.264 MP4 at 10-20 Mbps for 1080p is the sensible default; H.264 vs H.265 explains when HEVC is worth it.
How do you make a video small enough for Vimeo?
You make a video smaller for Vimeo by exporting at a lower bitrate or resolution, not by zipping it. Options in order of effort:
- Re-export from your editor at Vimeo's 1080p range (10-20 Mbps) instead of a camera original.
- Compress an existing file to 1080p or 720p with the free video compressor, which is free, runs in your browser and never uploads your file.
- Trim dead air at the start and end with the free video trimmer.
- Delete or archive old embeddable videos you no longer use, since paid storage doesn't renew.
If the video will also go to social platforms, cut vertical versions separately: the free social media video size guide lists each platform's sizes, and the best export settings for YouTube covers YouTube's.
Should you add captions before uploading to Vimeo?
Add captions after upload as a caption file, so viewers can switch them on and pick a language. Vimeo takes SRT and WebVTT files and can generate captions automatically; how to add subtitles to a Vimeo video has the steps. QuickVeed's auto subtitles make the SRT or VTT in 32 languages if you'd rather check the text before it goes up.
