On X (formerly Twitter), accounts without a paid subscription can post videos up to 140 seconds long (2 minutes 20 seconds) and up to 512 MB, per X's help center. Subscribers to X's paid plans can upload videos under 4 hours long and up to 16 GB. For the cleanest result, X's developer documentation recommends H.264 video at 1280×720, 720×1280 or 720×720, 30 or 60 fps, with AAC audio.

The short answer
Free X accounts: videos up to 140 seconds (2:20) and 512 MB. Paid plans: under 4 hours and up to 16 GB (1080p for videos up to 2 hours, 720p for 2 to 4 hours). Format: MP4 or MOV with H.264 High Profile, AAC-LC audio, 60 fps or less, aspect ratio between 1:3 and 3:1. Recommended sizes: 1280×720 (16:9), 720×1280 (9:16) or 720×720 (1:1). Animated GIFs: 15 MB and 350 frames at most.
Key takeaways
- 140 seconds is the length limit for accounts without a paid plan; trim or split anything longer.
- Posting from the app or website: 140 seconds and 512 MB on a free account, under 4 hours and 16 GB on a paid plan. Uploads through X's API have their own limits: 20 minutes and 8 GB (125 minutes and 16 GB for Premium).
- Aspect ratios from 1:3 (tall) to 3:1 (wide) are accepted; 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1 are recommended.
- Only AAC-LC audio in mono or stereo is accepted: HE-AAC and 5.1 surround are rejected.
- One video per post; it can't be combined with photos.
What is the video length limit on X?
The video length limit on X is 140 seconds (2 minutes 20 seconds) for accounts without a paid subscription. X's help center gives that figure alongside a 512 MB file size, and says subscribers to its paid plans can upload videos under 4 hours long and up to 16 GB: at 1080p for videos up to 2 hours, and at 720p from 2 to 4 hours. X's developer documentation adds that the maximum length depends on the account's Premium or verified status, and that the minimum is half a second.
| Free account | Paid plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum length (posting) | 140 seconds (2:20) | Under 4 hours (1080p up to 2 hours, 720p for 2-4 hours) |
| Maximum file size (posting) | 512 MB | 16 GB |
| API uploads (developer docs) | 20 minutes, 8 GB | 125 minutes, 16 GB (Premium) |
| Minimum length | 0.5 seconds | 0.5 seconds |
| Videos per post | 1 | 1 |
Why two sets of limits? The developer documentation, read on 26 October 2026, lists post video of up to 20 minutes and 8 GB by default, and 125 minutes and 16 GB for Premium, for uploads through X's API; the 140 seconds and 512 MB figures appear there only for videos in direct messages. The help center's limits are the ones that apply when you post from the app or website. A 140-second video rarely comes near either: even at 10 Mbps it's about 177 MB.
What video format and size does X want?
X wants an MP4 (or MOV) with H.264 video and AAC audio. Its developer documentation lists recommended settings and hard requirements:
| Setting | Recommended | Required (upload is rejected otherwise) |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 High Profile | Progressive scan; no open GOP; YUV 4:2:0 |
| Frame rate | 30 or 60 fps | 60 fps or less |
| Resolution | 1280×720, 720×1280 or 720×720 | Between 32×32 and 1280×1024 for API uploads |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 (landscape or portrait) or 1:1 | Between 1:3 and 3:1; square pixels (1:1 pixel aspect) |
| Video bitrate | At least 5,000 kbps | — |
| Audio | AAC-LC, at least 128 kbps | AAC-LC only (HE-AAC rejected); mono or stereo, not 5.1 |
The docs also say accounts with a subscription can upload 1080p and get 1080p playback. Exporting 1920×1080 from your editor is fine; X scales it as needed. If an upload fails with a vague processing error, the usual culprits are HE-AAC audio, 5.1 audio, a frame rate above 60, or a variable frame rate screen recording: re-export as H.264 MP4 with stereo AAC at 30 fps.
How do you post a video longer than 2 minutes 20 seconds on X?
On a free account, you post a longer video by trimming it to 2:20, splitting it into parts, or linking to the full version. In order of effort:
- Trim it. Cut the intro and outro and keep the strongest 2 minutes 20 seconds. The free video trimmer does it in your browser, free, runs in your browser and never uploads your file.
- Speed it up slightly. A 2:45 talking video at 1.2× runs 2:17. See how to speed up a video.
- Split it into a thread. Post part 1 as the first post and reply with parts 2, 3 and so on.
- Post a clip with a link to the full video on YouTube or your site.
| Video length | Parts of 2:20 or less | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| 3 minutes | 2 | 1:30 + 1:30 |
| 5 minutes | 3 | 1:40 × 3 |
| 10 minutes | 5 | 2:00 × 5 |
| 20 minutes | 9 | 2:13 × 9 (or post a clip and a link) |

How do you make a video small enough for X?
You make a video small enough for X by lowering its bitrate, since file size is bitrate times length. At 512 MB and 140 seconds you can use up to about 29 Mbps, which is far more than you need. Here's what a 2:20 video weighs at typical settings:
| Setting | Video bitrate | Size of 2:20 with 128 kbps audio |
|---|---|---|
| X's recommended minimum | 5 Mbps | about 90 MB |
| YouTube's 1080p30 recommendation | 8 Mbps | about 142 MB |
| High-quality 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | about 212 MB |
| Phone 4K recording | 50 Mbps | about 877 MB (too big) |
A 4K phone clip is the usual reason an upload is refused. Shrink it with the free video compressor (Light keeps up to 1080p at about 3 Mbps, roughly 23 MB a minute), or calculate any bitrate and size with the free video bitrate calculator.
What shape should a video on X be?
Use 16:9 for screen recordings and landscape footage, and 1:1 or vertical for phone-first content. X accepts anything from 1:3 to 3:1, so a 9:16 video posts fine. In a scrolling timeline, a square or 4:5 frame takes more space than a 16:9 one, which helps it get noticed.
To change the shape without cutting anyone out, the free video resizer places the video on a blurred background at 1080×1080, 1080×1350 or 1080×1920. For every platform's sizes on one page, see the free social media video size guide.
What are X's limits for GIFs?
X's developer documentation recommends animated GIFs of 15 MB or less, 1280×1080 or smaller and no more than 350 frames, with no more than 300 million pixels in total (width × height × frames). It warns that a GIF can still fail if it's within the size limit. A post can carry up to 4 photos, or 1 GIF, or 1 video.
350 frames is about 23 seconds at 15 fps or 35 seconds at 10 fps. Make one from a short clip with the free video to GIF converter, and see how to convert a video to GIF for settings that keep it small.
Should you add captions to videos on X?
Yes. Much of the timeline plays muted, so captions carry the message for anyone who doesn't tap for sound. Burn them into the video so they show in every app; open vs closed captions explains the difference. QuickVeed's auto subtitles transcribe the clip and burn captions in 11 styles, from 2 credits for a 1-minute transcript plus a credit a minute for the captioned copy (3 at least).
